Alcohols and the like

15 09 2010

In recent days, I’ve taken to looking for a decent stock of various liquors to keep around for a small party, rainy day, crappy day, etc.

So far, I’ve decided to get vodka, either a bourbon or some kind of Irish whiskey, Baileys, Kahlua, and… yeah. That’s really all I’ve thought so far. I’m not too high up on beer. Hops don’t really fit my tastes, but I heard that Guinness and some other dark stouts are good. I don’t really like anything that they advertise on TV, except for maybe Dos Equis. I’ve heard that’s pretty good. I’ve heard that Lone Star’s good too, but I think that might only be a microbrew in Austin, Texas. But… yeah, either way, I’m not too high up on beer.

I much prefer stronger liquor, like vodka and bourbon. Stuff you can drink straight. I also like mixed drinks, but that requires a tumbler and some other stuff I don’t have. So far, I’ve only had some of the really cheap vodka like Smirnoff and other bottom-shelf crap. Now that I’ve got my own place, though, I’m thinking of getting some Luksosowa. It’s a Polish potato vodka that’s supposed to have less… irritants or whatever they’re called. Either way, it’s meant to give you less of a hangover.

As for bourbon, I like wheated bourbon. Rye bourbon’s not bad and I certainly like it, but wheated goes down easier for me. I was thinking about getting some Old Fitzgerald. If I don’t get bourbon, I’ll probably end up getting Jameson Irish whiskey. Speaking of Irish alcohol, I was also thinking of getting Guinness so I could make Irish car bombs with Baileys and Kahlua… but I think the fact that they have to import Guinness raises the price, so I might try to find some kind of alternative.

Other stuff I’m not looking at are… basically some coconut rum, some other mixers, and maybe some Smirnoff Ice. But those aren’t that important. Smirnoff Ice is good to keep around. Say what you will, that stuff tastes awesome.

And… yeah. That’s about it really. I swear I haven’t turned into an alky…

Why the U.S. Should Lower the Drinking Age to 18

Why?

Because I want to buy my own damn vodka goddamnit.

More to come when I get bored/get more legitimate reasons. :P

Some Randomness about Headphones and Alcohol

5 08 2009

I don’t have any real topic to write about today, so I think I’ll just write until I get bored. There’s nothing really interesting in here… I don’t think. I’m not sure. I haven’t written it yet! :P

On Monday, I bought a pair of Sennheiser HD 205 headphones for about $11, plus shipping. I’m pretty excited about that because they’re sold for around $80 on the site and between $40 and $50 elsewhere. They look like this:

http://www.sennheiser.com/me/icm.nsf/resources/C12570AD0063ACD4C1257070004C0472/$File/HD_205_410px.jpg

As you can see, they’re over-the-head headphones. According to some of the reviews that I’ve read on the Internet, the sound quality is excellent for it’s price range ($40-$80) and it’s quite durable. However, some people have said that it’s a bit too tight and that it gets uncomfortable with extended use. I’m not really sure how big my head is, but for the most part, I think I’d prefer to have a tighter, more secure pair of headphones than a pair that was too loose and less secure. The HD 205s are supra-aural, meaning that they rest on the ear, rather than circumaural, meaning that they enclose the entire ear. However, the pads manage to seal out most outside noise so that it feels like they’re circumaural. Either way, as long as it keeps outside noise out, I think I’ll be fine.

The cable is 3 meters (almost 10 feet) long, which is… a bit much. I’m not really sure how I’ll get around that, since I’d been planning on using it for mobile purposes. I’ll probably end up stuff most of it into a jean pocket or using a rubber band to keep them all together. I only learned that the cable was so long after I’d bought it because I had been more concerned about price and quality rather than the small problems… come to think of it, I might have to buy a headphone adapter for my first-gen iPhone. Some of you might know that the headphone jack in the first-gen iPhone is recessed into the iPhone so that it’s impossible for certain types of headphones to get in. One way to get around this was to get a headphone adapter. Another way was to simply shave off some of the plastic on the base of the headphones so that it’s able to get in. I’ve done it before on a cheap set of headphones and it wasn’t too difficult. So… yeah, that’s about it on headphones.

I think I’m going to go play some more Sims 2, so I’ll just leave you with this new drinking game that I thought up. It’s called Russian Spin the Bottle. Basically, it’s spin the bottle, except that the bottle is a bottle of vodka. So, the player will spin the bottle and either choose to kiss the person that the bottle lands on or take a shot of vodka as a penalty. Alternatively, if the player doesn’t want to down a solid shot of vodka, he/she can mix it with a something if the player so chooses. The result is drunken make-outs and awkward mornings!

While we’re on the subject of drinking games and alcohol, my favorite drinking game is Kings. Go look it up on Wikipedia and make your own house rules. It’s much more fun that way. My favorite drink are still White Russians… they’re quite tasty. If you don’t have cream, you could also just use milk, but it’s less tasty that way. Pineapple rum is also good. The only alcohol I really don’t like is probably beer. I don’t like the taste, the smell, or the association with dumbass frat boys. Personally, I feel like if you have enough money to get three kegs of beer, you might as well also get a bottle of vodka. I like vodka. Hahahahaha…

AH! But I don’t endorse underage drinking in any way, shape, or form! It’s bad for you! Or something. Actually, as long as you know what you’re doing and you set a limit for yourself, you should be fine. Even though I’ve been drinking for about a year now, I’ve never gotten drunk. However, I think I’ve had a hangover… it’s not fun. I’m not really sure it’s a hangover though… Judging by the first and only (possible) hangover I’ve ever had, I think my symptoms include vomiting and having a headache. Loud noises and bright lights don’t affect me though. Either way, as long as I drink a lot of water before I go to sleep, I think I should be fine? Maybe. I’m not really sure yet. I suppose I’ll just have to try it the next time I drink more than I usually do…

Hmmm… when I do drink at parties, I have a maximum of 2 or 3 drinks. The most I’ve ever had was 5 drinks, but that was spread over the course of about 3 to 4 hours…
